In Cyber Security, IT Advice

As impressively robust as IT security is these days, it seems that the main weakness in cyber security is still human error.

According to a new report from BAE Systems, 71 per cent of all recorded incidents come through as phishing attacks, followed by 65 per cent being untargeted viruses or malware.

Specialist IT security incident teams are saying that they are dealing with an increasing number of incidents every month, and as many as 66 per cent of organisations say that they respond to between one and 25 incidents on a monthly basis. 25 per cent of companies have had 99 incidents and eight per cent have responded to a whopping 100 or more incidents per month.

Where is the weakness in security?

Many organisations are simply not prepared for responding to cyber threats. 25 per cent of incident response teams don’t have a readiness exercise prepared with senior management teams and 22 per cent only rely on temporary incident response resources. More worryingly than that, some companies simply have no security resources at all.

How can companies improve their cyber security?

Even with the most expensive and robust security practices in place on your machines, it seems that hackers are still able to trick the person behind the machine.

It’s more important than ever before to make sure your organisation raises employee awareness when it comes to cybersecurity. Show employees what to look out for, educate them regularly (as soon as new phishing tricks appear), and make sure training is practised throughout the entire organisation.

Human error is still the most vulnerable weakness in cyber security so these best security practices are essential for protecting your company, your employees, your clients and your reputation.
