It’s happening this month! The long awaited first ever Microsoft retail store is opening its doors on the 11th of July.
The store is situated in London’s busy Oxford Circus, and it’s going to be big. With 21,932 square feet of floorspace and a store that stretches over three floors, it’s a very prestigious size in a very prestigious location.
Microsoft are here to make an impact and this will, without a doubt, be the best place to get hands-on with Surface, Windows, Office, Xbox and PC gaming, as well as alternative reality technologies.
John Carter, the newly appointed Store Manager, says: “This will be more than just a store. Customers will have the chance to explore and get hands-on with technology.”
With a chain of stores within Canada, Australia, the US and Puerto Rico, it’s been a long time coming for the UK to have its very own Microsoft Store.
So, what can we expect from the store?
Microsoft have announced they’re going to create an experience that’s a combination of traditional retail and exhibition space. Unlike other clean, whitewashed stores, Microsoft describes including eye-catching “immersive video walls” that will snake through the store.
Interactive zones and workshops:
There will be interactive zones where customers can play with new hardware, including the HoloLens mixed reality headset and a “Community Theatre” where visitors can attend workshops on coding and STEM.
“Answers Desk” is Microsoft’s equivalent of a Genius-bar helpdesk, except they have opened up their services to all devices, including Apple products. They promise to at least try to help.
Microsoft say that their aim is to be more inclusive, targeting a broader audience from business professionals to educators. It certainly seems that they are making an impact by changing the status quo, veering away from other techniques used by their competitors.
David Porter from the Microsoft Store adds: “London is one of the world’s most exciting shopping destinations, and we look forward to empowering customers to explore all that is possible with Microsoft.”
