A new Office app for Windows 10 customers is replacing the current ‘My Office’ app in their Store.
The new app has a simple interface and not only is it free, but it pushes other free online Office apps alongside it. Initially, these apps were only available on Microsoft HoloLens, but Microsoft are now expanding its availability to iOS and Android phones in the future.
The goals of the new app
The new app is designed to be a lot more useful to Office users. It essentially acts as a hub for launching recent documents, accessing the Office desktop apps, or simply finding the free web versions of Office.
According to The Verge, one of the goals of this new app is to better promote Microsoft’s free version of Office that can be found online. Microsoft has struggled to properly promote the feature in the past, and is hoping to draw everyone’s attention to it now.
Many Microsoft users are unaware of the current free online software services that the company has to offer, these include free online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
So, when the new Office app is installed, it will show users all of the available Office 365 apps and will promote these free online apps to raise awareness of their availability.
How to get the new app
If you already have the MyOffice app then the new Office app will be downloaded as an automatic update, or simply search for “Office” in the search bar of the Windows start menu to open the app and trigger the download.
The app can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. The company says that the app works with any Office 365 subscription, Office 2019, Office 2016, and Office Online (the free Web-based version of Office for consumers).
For any new devices, the new app will come preinstalled on your Windows 10 device and won’t require an Office 365 subscription.
