We’ve come to rely on a speedy internet connection, particularly in the world of business – but what do you do if your system has other ideas? An unreliable and slow internet connection is no good for frustration levels or business productivity! Here are our tips for improving your internet speed:
Check your internet speed
Start by checking your current internet speed and monitoring it at different times throughout the day, as well as on different devices. This will allow you to see whether the issue is continuous, or whether it’s restricted to certain times, and even certain devices.
Review your router
Try turning your router off and on again (as obvious as this might seem!) which can work wonders for bringing you back to your usual speed. If that doesn’t work, try repositioning it to a location which least obstructs the signal – walls, furniture, and other technology can affect its strength (moving the router would only be helpful if you’re connected to the Wi-Fi). If you’re still having issues, it might be time to upgrade your router so get in touch with your internet provider.
Check your computers
How old are your computers and software? Out-of-date systems might not be able to cope with modern internet speeds, which will undoubtedly impact their performance. It might be time for an upgrade…
Review devices using your bandwidth
When was the last time you checked how many devices are using your network? Every device will be competing for a share of the bandwidth, which may well explain your slow speed.
Make sure you have a strong Wi-Fi password so that only authorised users can access the network to prevent unauthorised users connecting and set up a separate guest Wi-Fi with set data limits. These steps are important for security too.
Run regular security scans
Frequent anti-virus and anti-malware scans are essential to keep your systems secure, but they can also slow everything down. It’s advisable to schedule them for ‘off peak’ or quieter times to minimise disruption. Don’t forget to run them regularly to keep demand steady and security high.
Review your Wi-Fi
Did you know that a wired connection will always be stronger than a wireless connection? While it might not be practical in all circumstances, it’s worth using a wired connection when you can. Not possible? You could also invest in a Wi-Fi signal booster or it might be worth considering an upgrade.
Speak to your internet provider
None of these making a difference? It’s time to pick up the phone and explore the alternatives – slow internet is not an option!
