While these targeted ransomware attacks demand a more defined intelligence-gathering method, they enable criminals to inflict maximum disruption to the victims, while earning more money than ever.
Due to their notoriously limited resources, and the havoc that can be reeked, our hospitals, schools and the like, continue to suffer as the primary targets of cybercriminal organisations.
The vulnerability of IoT devices
The combination of a massive increase in IoT devices, and the 5G network roll-out, will, unfortunately, boost the number of attacks against smart devices. The threat of a considerable rise in IoT botnets is real.
Unfortunately, although the device vendors are currently implementing new system security features, many don’t fulfil security-by-design, which leaves these systems wide-open to hackers.
Specific segments of IoT will undoubtedly become more secure over time, however there’s a fear that the speed at which the market grows is happening too fast, and taking precedence over stricter security measures.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) based attacks
As AI systems automate manual tasks and improve human activities more and more, their involvement in offensive actions also grows as a potential risk for the coming years. There are concerns regarding the appropriation of AI-based systems to generate ‘deep fakes’ in misinformation campaigns deployed by nation-state hackers.
However on the flip side, the integration of AI vastly improves the early detection of threats and aids their reduction. AI helps organisations to rapidly respond to attacks and block ongoing aggression. AI-based solutions will rise dramatically this year to improve network security.
The need for cybersecurity just got more real than ever before. Watchful eyes are needed EVERYWHERE. In response, merchants are adopting ‘edge infrastructure’ to further buffer their security platforms. Last year saw Netskope dazzle with its NewEdge infrastructure. Palo Alto Networks also partnered with Google Cloud to develop a multi-cloud security structure utilising Prisma Cloud. More security companies will surely follow in their footsteps.
