In Cyber Security

In a recent report by Clearswift, 59% of business decision makers highlighted that phishing emails are currently the biggest concern for UK businesses when it comes to cyber-threats.  In fact, phishing emails ranked as the top concern compared to any other type of cyber threat in all the surveyed regions.

Clearswift surveyed 600 senior business decision makers and 1200 employees in the UK, US, Germany and Australia.

Dr Guy Bunker, SVP of Products for Clearswift, explained that, “Email security consistently rears its head as a key vulnerability in UK cyber defences. This highlights that businesses need to change the way they’re approaching the task of mitigating these risks”.

He added that, “It is easy for a company to perform mock phishing exercises and physical penetration tests to assess vulnerabilities, however this underhanded approach to catch staff out may not always prove to be the best way forward. The approach should be twofold, focused on balancing education with a robust technological safety net. This will ultimately help ensure the business stays safe.”

But that’s not all…

According to the report, the second biggest threat was thought to be employees sharing passwords, with 33% of UK businesses listing this as a weakness.  Third on the list was the misuse of USB Sticks and removable devices for data transfer, with 31% listing it as a concern.

Other cyber threats to make the top 10 list of concerns were ex-employees retaining access to networks (28%), and viruses as a result of malware on personal devices (26%).  Considering some of the major hacking stories making news headlines in 2017, Hackers were only listed as a worry by 25% of those surveyed.

Employees not following data protection policies only ranked 4th on the list, with 30% listing the matter as an area of concern, something which may come as a surprise to some considering the GDPR deadline on May 25th 2018.
