In Cyber Security, Events

Earlier this week, it was reported that up to 100 banks from across the world had been hacked and experts are saying it could result in £648m in losses. A leading Russian security company believe the hackers gained access to the banks’ networks by sending fake emails to staff members.

Talking to the New York Times, the Russian company believe this attack was one of the most sophisticated they had seen, with criminals manipulating cash machines to dispense stolen money. It is thought that the cyber criminal group is still active.

However, it is not just huge companies being affected.

Jamie Oliver, the TV chef, was recently a victim to a malware problem after his website was hacked.

It is believed that malicious code was installed on the website in order to exploit vulnerabilities in users’ systems and install malware.

Talking to the BBC, online security consultant Graham Cluley stated that the hackers could have potentially gained control of a user’s system and directed fake searches to results where the cyber attacker could ‘steal’ money.

With over 10 million visitors per month on the celebrity chef’s website, the popularity of the website made the problem a ‘serious’ incident and Mr Cluley highlights the need for all websites and servers to have the right protection in place.

Both these stories demonstrate the need for staff to be aware of the risks of cyber attacks, what the right precautions are, and for businesses to realise that a cyber attack can not only cause serious problem for their own business but for their customers.

If you would like any advice about protecting your business from the risk of cyber attacks, come along to one of the Trust Group’s cyber seminars being held in Lincoln and Grantham, where SCS Technology will be discussing the importance of IT security for SMEs.
